Antony Gormley is a British sculptor whose work has been exhibited throughout the UK, Australia, and even the United States. Gormley primarily uses casts of his own or other people's bodies to cause the viewer to question their own role in nature. Gormley went to school at Trinity College, in Cambridge where he studied archaeology, anthropology and the history of art. From there he traveled to India to study Buddhism. In 1974 he attended Saint Martin's School of Art and Goldsmiths in London before moving on to study sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art. His work centers on the human body. Most of the sculptures especially his early work are cast from his own body. The work is indexical rather than symbolic, tracing a real event of a human in a particular time. The statues are cast in a variety of materials including iron and fiberglass. Antony Gormley has won the Turner Prize in 1994 and was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance for his set design in Babel. He has also received the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the PraemiumImperiale in 2013. In 2014 he was knighted for services to the arts. Less
