Regarded as one of the most influential artists of his time, David Hockney is a multi-faceted artist whose works span across the mediums of painting, photography and print-making; his work has been known to adopt the mundane realism of Pop Art and photography, with special attention being paid to light. A Bigger Splash is perhaps Hockney’s most notable works – the painting depicts a cloudless, sunny Californian day; the serenity of the scene is disrupted by the splash in the pool which took Hockney two weeks to paint – he has noted that he particularly enjoys the fact that he spent so long depicting a moment that would only last two seconds in reality.
