Donald Sultan is an American painter, known for using spackle, tar, enamel and vinyl tiles in his work. His artworks have been shown internationally at a number of galleries and museums. Sultan has also won a number of awards for his innovative artistic work. Donald Sultan is a native of Asheville, North Carolina, and comes from a family with an interest in the arts. His mother was in theater and his father created abstract paintings as a hobby. Sultan got into acting as well, then learned how to construct and paint theatrical sets. This led to apprenticeships with notable theater companies. His father encouraged him to pursue a career in art, and Donald Sultan graduated with a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He then went on to pursue a Master's in Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago, and went to New York to start his career after graduation.
