Eric Fischl is a painter and draftsman, famous for suggestive and not provocative paintings of suburban life. He specializes in painting, sculpture and printmaking, and his most provocative works are often oil on linen. His portrayal of modern suburban life began in the 1960s and 1970s. Eric Fischl's work is compared to Degas, although the society he depicts is more violent and unpredictable. He enjoys setting up a situation in his work, then letting the viewer figure out what may be happening. His earlier works depict subjects that are less appropriate, such as adolescent sexuality of suburban boys. His later exhibits include taking numerous pictures of a couple in a home he purchased, enhancing them and using them as a basis for paintings. As a student of Degas and Impressionism, Fischl uses movement and an accurate depiction of light light to depict ordinary subjects, using light brushstrokes in his paintings. His subject matter often violates conventional rules, and his use of color sometimes takes precedence over lines and contours. The subject itself goes against conventions in paintings such as "bad boy." Less
