Through the critical eye of the contemporary artist, Franz Ackermann is recognized, by his work, as a social commentator on the nature of travel, tourism, globalization and urbanism. Shortly after completing his studies in Germany, his first major series of work was entitled Mental Maps, created during his time in Hong Kong. A series of small watercolor paintings, the images depicted semi-realistic architectural views of the buildings he found around him. Ackermann would later combine these images with photos and found objects to create a large scale installation. A continuation on the theme of the globalization can be found in African Diamond, a painting depicting abstract map sections covered by African sculpture in the shape of a diamond. Ackermann’s intention is to depict both sides of the conversation surrounding globalization and urbanism – the glamor and beauty contrasted with the consumption and the waste. Franz Ackermann was inspired by Cubism, His style of psychedelic painting and installations have cartographical elements mixed with abstract and bright colors. While reminiscent of Cubism, his work has been further described as cartoonish abstractions. Whether Franz Ackermann’s work is seen through the 20th century view of Cubism or the modern contemporary lens of social commentary, either way, the work is widely accepted and exhibited in galleries around the world.
