Franz West was an artist from Austria. While his parents were not artists, they had an appreciation for art, especially his mother. She was a dentist, but would take West to art-viewing trips in Italy, and this shaped the way that Franz viewed and appreciated art. When Franz West was 26, he began to study art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Around 1970s, Franz West starting making drawings, then he soon moved on to painting collages and including magazine images in his art to celebrate his appreciation for pop culture. Plaster, paper mache, wire, aluminum and polyester are among the materials that West was known for using to create his eye-catching and though-provoking works. In the 1990s, Franz West was known for using aluminum to create art pieces that closely resembled Vienna sausages. Franz West had a number of exhibits in his lifetime, and displayed his work at MUMOK in Vienna and the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London. West also received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art before his death in 2012. Less
