Gunther Uecker was born in Wendorf, Mecklenburg. In 1956 he began using nails (the hammering kind) in his art. Gunther Uecker joined together with the art group which propagated the beginning of the art made in opposition to the German Informal. He used the medium of light in his artwork. Gunther Uecker joined the group 'ZERO' which consisted of his fellow artists Heinz Mack and Otto Penn. In 1962 the group began working together in side-by-side studios in Amsterdam. Their work ended up with an installation of the of the 'Salon de Lumiere' at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This spurred a revolutions of light parlous in Eurpope. In 1666 when the group disband, Gunther Uecker continued with is work with nails. He nailed into pieces of furniture, musical instruments and other household things, and then he combined the nails with the art. He became interested in European 'avant-garde' of the 20s and 30, and he was also very interested in Asian artwork and style.. One of the last things Uecker did was a design he did of a prayer room for the renovated Reichstag building in Berlin. Gunther Uecker also taught college for almost twenty years at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He was promoted to the prestigious 'Professor' assignment in 1796. Uecker has show his work at many exhibitions, including documenta 4, in Kassel, Germany in 1966, The Venice Biennale in 1970, and many solo shows. One of his solo shows which was wildly popular was at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf in 1983. Uecker held his first solo exhibition in the America at the Howard Wise Gallery on West 57th Street, showing important work in 1966, and was greeted with very high public opinion. Less
