Julian Opie was born in London, England. He studied art at Goldsmiths, University of London under conceptual artist Michael Craig-Martin.He is regarded as a visual artist and in the 1980s he produced a series of painted metal sculptures which brought him to the attention of the British art scene. He is regarded as one of the most important artists of his generation. Julian Opie’s work is reminiscent of Pop Art and combines minimalistic images with digital alteration to produce striking images. Julian Opie uses photographs as a base for his graphic portraits, which are created using computer software. Detail is minimal, color simple and faces are outlined in black, while retaining recognizable likeness to the original subject. Using a variety of media including painted metal, vinyl, LED lights and inkjet on canvas, Opie continues the minimalistic theme in depictions of books, buildings and landscapes. Julian Opie’s use of digital technology makes his work particularly suited to contemporary themes and his best known image is the album cover which he designed for the British pop band Blur, showing the band members in his familiar style. Influenced by the graphic style of Japanese artists such as Kitagawa Utamaro, he produced a series of animated films of Japanese landscapes following a visit to Mount Fuji. Julian Opie images can be found at the National Portrait Gallery in London, in the Tate Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He has been awarded the Sergent Fellowship at the British School in Rome and has received a number of public commissions worldwide. Less
