Mark Grotjahn is best known for his bold, abstract drawings and paintings of butterflies. Though officially untitled, this ongoing series of works are often identified by their primary color palette. One example is his 2004 “(large coloured butterfly white background 10 wings)” drawn with colored pencil on paper. Another example is his 2002 “(Green Butterfly)” painted with oil on canvas. His Butterfly series uses multiple vanishing points situated closely together, which play with traditional perceptions of perspective. The painted butterflies are varied with subtle hues, textures and tones on elongated and narrow canvases. Grotjahn incorporates subtle and varied brush strokes to create beveled edges, concentrated brush lines, and under-painted areas to produce shifts in tones. The drawn butterflies feature a rainbow of colors meticulously applied with geometric precision over a largely neutral background. Mark Grotjahn has been described as an artist whose work brings together historical movements such as Op Art and Russian Constructivism. His paintings and drawings have been praised for elegance of execution within a controlled compositional framework. His Butterfly series has been praised for its unique investigations of Renaissance perspective techniques. Grotjahn has also created individual abstract paintings and drawings which reflect synthesis of modernist styles. Grotjahn studied at the Maine Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. his B.F.A. was earned at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and his M.F.A. from the University of California, Berkeley. His works have been exhibited in museums around the world. Less
