Richard Tuttle is a post-minimalist painter and sculptor whose signature is small-scale, intimate works with a lightness of touch. He also produces drawings, prints, art books, and art installations, and many of his pieces cross the boundaries between categories. Active since the sixties, Tuttle has influenced many other contemporary artists and is himself influenced by the post-war minimalist and conceptual movements. From those starting points he developed a style that is less grand and sprawling, more human and personal. "Purple Octagonal" (1967), for example, is not an octagon painted onto traditional canvas, but a creased piece of soft-colored cloth with eight uneven sides, and "The Place in the Window II" (2013) features clumps of dyed cotton pulp clinging to wire mesh shapes. By assembling string, wire, paper, tape, and fabric into simple forms in subtle colors, Richard Tuttle aims to transform commonplace objects into high art. Less
