Artist Biography : Sol LeWitt
Sol LeWitt was an American artist part of various art movements including Conceptual and Minimalism with his drawings and sculptures. Sol LeWitt preferred to call his sculptures ""structures"" and he created art in a variety of mediums including; printmaking, photography, drawing and painting. His works appeared in museums and galleries around the globe as solo exhibitions. Sol LeWitt is often called the founder of Minimal and Conceptual art. His inventive two and three dimensional works vary from wall drawings to hundreds of art pieces on paper extending to structures in the form of pyramids, towers and geometric forms. The sizes of his creations vary also from gallery sized installations to monumental outdoor size. Sol LeWitt’s first sculptures done in the 1960's used modular form of squares arranged in various visual complexity. Sol LeWitt’s early ""structures"" used open, modular structures from cubes. After he had created an early body of closed wooden form objects, heavily lacquered, he decided to remove the skin and reveal just the structure. The skeletal forms, simplified open cube, was the building block of his three dimensional work. He created many of his modular structures on a large scale, constructed in aluminum or steel by industrial fabricators. In 2007 Sol created a cube comprised from more than 1,000 light colored bricks which was installed at the Kivik Art Centre in Lilla Stenshuvud, Sweden. Sol Lewitt conceived guidelines or simple diagrams for two dimensional works he applied directly on a wall. He used; graphite and then crayon, later colored pencil and finally rich washes of India ink and acrylic paint. With the use of combinations of two lines crossing, randomly placed and using arcs from corners and sides, straight and broken lines, his art unfolded on gallery walls around the world. His, Wall Drawing # 792: Black Rectangles and Squares underscore his interest in the intersections between art and architecture Less
