Thomas Ruff is a photographer from Germany. He lives and works in Dusseldorf. He is one of six children and was born in the Black Forest region of Germany. Thomas Ruff is known for conceptual serial photography, and developed his own variation of this photography method after listening to the lectures of Benjamin HD Buchloh. During his time as a student, Thomas Ruff began taking photographs of the landscape in a style that was indicative of the 1950s through the 1970s. In the 1980s, Thomas Ruff began photographing portraits. He captured them in passport-style, with a flash that didn't have motion blur. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Ruff became known for using neutral or light backgrounds in his photos. Thomas Ruff is known for his serial photography series Hauser, which showcased the economy and architecture of West Germany, and Sterne, which was an artistic collection of night sky images. Ruff also published a collection of nude photos in 2003.
