Ugo Rondinone is an Italian-born Swiss; in the light of his rainbow-coloured signs, such as Hell, Yes and Our Magic Hour it is interesting to note that Rondinone was born in the resort town, Brunnen. The works of Ugo Rondinone are often created in bright colours that resemble the hues on signs at fun-fairs, yet they remain enigmatic and call forth a reflective response from the viewer. These contrasts and paradoxes seem to pervade much of Ugo Rondinone’s exhibited work, even those of one of his most recent exhibitions, 2015’s clouds + mountains + waterfalls, now showing at Sadie Cole’s HQ, 62 Kingly St, W1, London. With a studio in New York, where he now lives, Ugo Rondinone studied at Hochschule für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna for four years from 1986 to 1990. His oeuvres have been exhibited across Europe, the United States and Britain from 1985 to the present day. A prolific artist, in 2016 Rondinone has generated the outdoor installation Seven Magic Mountains, which has been installed in the Nevada Desert. The artist continues his lines of enquiry into natural phenomena and their impact on the human beings who live within and around them. His oeuvres continue to mystify and to satisfy at once. Less
