Wegman initially began his artistic career as a painter but began to capture images of his dog, Man Ray - named after the Surrealist painter – using various costumes and humorous props; with a following pack of dogs, Wegman started to capture them on video and a lot of the subsequent footage was used throughout a number of films, advertisements and television programmes. As a painter, Wegman’s work includes various canvases depicting smoke and fire with reference to natural disasters; Volcano is perhaps the artist’s most notable painting of this kind and portrays a solitary bus on a highway as smoke and darkness surrounds.
