Andy Goldsworthy is a sculptor and environmentalist whose work often makes use of natural landscapes and both rural and urban settings – a particular branch of the arts known as ‘land art.’ Born in Britain, and having lived in various different rural settings across Britain, Goldsworthy has created and exhibited a lot of his work at various points around the country, notably at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.

« My art is an attempt to reach beyond the surface appearance. »
Andy Goldsworthy
His most oft-used material is stone – one of his most famous works, Stone House, can be found in Herring, Australia. Goldsworthy produced a piece inspired by San Francisco earthquakes – the piece featured a giant crack in a pavement that branched off into smaller cracks, made by a hammer and thus spontaneous and original.

« I am not a performer but occasionally I deliberately work in a public context. Some sculptures need the movement of people around them to work. »
Andy Goldsworthy

His materials solely pertain to nature; twigs, stones, petals and mud are just a few of the many materials that comprise his work; he also often works solely with his hands, teeth and makeshift tools, as well as enlisting the help of traditional dry-stone wallers for a few of his instalments, notably ‘Roof’.
