Bernd and Hilla Becher met due to their interest in photography. Bernd died in 2007 and Hilla passed away in 2015 yet their combined efforts as conceptual artists provides a lasting legacy. The Bechers made their reputations as concept artists taking photographs in industrial areas of Germany.

Dusseldorf School of Photography is the name for the photographers who studied under Bernd and Hiller Beecher at the Kunstakademie Dusseldorf during the 1970s. This group was devoted to the black and white industrial images of the German tradition called New Objectivity.
