Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

Acclaimed for his work across installation, sculpture and photography, Berndnaut Smilde is a visual artist whose works often incorporate scientific principles – his Nimbus series is arguably his most notable work and consists of artificial clouds, created by Smilde himself; visible for only a matter of seconds, and created across a number of sites including cathedrals and castles, the clouds represent a long-standing theme present throughout the artist’s work: transience.

« I don’t have any magic to give I just put things in a different order,
I think that is what artists do. »

Berndnaut Smilde
Smilde also emphasises the notion of duality throughout his work and has stated that his Nimbus series was designed with the aim of posing two possibilities, stating “you could see the cloud as a sign of misfortune.

« I’m really interested in work that exits between reality and representation in a way that it doesn’t really function in the end. »
Berndnaut Smilde

You could also read it as an element out of the Dutch landscape paintings in a physical form.” (Artist website)

What is site specific art?

What is site specific art?

Artwork that's created to exist in a given/certain place. Location is taken into account by the artist as he plans and creates his artwork. Robert Irwin reined and promoted it in California. Site Specific Art came after modernist objects as artist's reaction to the world's situation. Modernists objects were nomadic, transportable, only existed in museum space and were for commodification and market.
