Carlos Cruz-Diez
artist biography | original signed artworks & limited edition prints for sale
Carlos Cruz-Diez has had a great influence on the development of contemporary art. He is a kinetic-optic artist who has made an intensive study of the physical properties and effects of color. He can create art out of the effects of light on color, without the need for any physical medium or form. From 1940-45 Carlos Cruz-Diez attended the School of Fine Arts in Caracas and had his first solo exhibition in Caracas in 1947, at the Venezuelan-American Institute. He initially worked as an artistic director for an advertising agency and then as an illustrator for a daily newspaper. In 1957 he opened his own studio in Caracas, focusing on industrial design and the visual arts. From 1958 to 1960 he taught at the Central University of Venezuela, where he was professor of Typographical Design. Since moving to Paris in 1960, the focus of his work has been on the investigation into color and how it can irregular patterns. His “Physichromies” project color into narrow spaces between vertical light modulators. Variations in color appear and disappear, in the same way that these occur naturally in a landscape, depending on the viewer in relation to the light source. There is no symbolic meaning, cultural references or narrative to this form of art. Each person will have a unique perspective on color patterns that appear to change as they are viewed. The works of Carlos Cruz-Diez have been widely exhibited and purchased by major art institutions around the world. Less
