Dan Graham is an American writer, curator, and artist. Due to his interests in popular culture and architecture, Graham's work can be found in genres such as performance art, installations, video, and photography. However, some of his most well-known work is from a series of photos that depicted suburban development in New Jersey known as Homes for America (1966-67).

« In fact, I always disliked conceptual art, because my work is about anarchistic humor. »
Dan Graham
An interesting thing about Graham's work is the way he tries to make the concept of his work more apparent than the actual piece itself. This can be seen in almost all of his pieces, which is why he is often labeled as a conceptual artist. However, Dan Graham is best known for using glass and mirrored pavilions to bring multiple physiological and psychological affects on the viewer.

« When you define the audience, the performer becomes what the audience wants. Politicians do that all the time. »
Dan Graham

The fact that Dan Graham's work truly cannot be interpreted in only one way is why so many fans of Graham's work have debated about the overall impression that his work gives them. This is also what landed Dan Graham among some of the greatest artists of our time.

What is Performance Art?

What is Performance Art?

Performance presented within the context of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary. It may be scripted or unscripted, random or orchestrated carefully; spontaneous or may carefully be planned without the participation of the audience. Performance can be through the media or live and the artist performing can either be present or not. The situation can involve the four basic elements: space, performer's body/his presence through a medium, time and performer-audience relationship. Artwork constitutes actions of a group or an individual at a particular time and space.
