Jenny Saville

Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

Jenny Saville is a modern British painter best known for her works depicting nude female figures in large scale. She credits her approach to the works of Pablo Picasso, which showed her the depiction of people as if they were substantial rather than ephemeral. One of her better known works, Branded, is in oil on a 7' x 6' canvas.

« Painting is my natural language. I feel in my own universe when I’m painting. »
Jenny Saville
Jenny Saville painted her own face on a female form that was obese, with a midsection and breasts that are the size of caricature. The figure is even holding out skin folds in a way that seems demonstrative.

« I do hope I play out the contradictions that I feel, all the anxieties and dilemmas. If they’re there in the work, then that’s brilliant. »
Jenny Saville

Fulcrum features three obese female forms on an 8 1/2' x 16' canvas, all stacked on a medical trolley. After painting, Saville applied thin tape strips vertically and then took them off, causing a contrast between the straight lines and the curves of the flesh. Her work seems to counter the societal "ideal" of the slender female form.

Who are the Young British Artists - YBA

Who are the Young British Artists - YBA

Also known as Britart and Brit artists. All these terms refer to a group of artists who started exhibiting together in the year 1988 in London. Majority of the artists graduated at Goldsmiths from BA fine arts course in the late 1980s. They are famous for wild living, use of waste/ throwaway materials and both entrepreneurial and oppositional attitude. In addition, they dominated British art and achieved wide media coverage. Most of these artists were collected and supported initially by Charles Saatchi.
