Magdalena Abakanowicz artist biography | original signed artworks & limited edition prints for sale
Magdalena Abakanowicz (1930 - 2017) was a Polish sculptor and textile artist. Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw during the time of Soviet occupation, Abakanowicz produced work which can be viewed as a bridge between modernism – which she was forbidden to study formally, in favor of Soviet 'socialist-realism' - and postmodernism. Magdalena Abakanowicz worked extensively within the mediums of textile manipulation and three-dimensional sculpture, as well as producing numerous gouaches, watercolors and drawings. A notable work of her early career as an artist was the Abakans, which she produced in the 1960s and were three-dimensional textile formations suspended from a ceiling. In the 1970s Abakanowicz created a series of headless sculptures, which she named Alterations, and a series of large-scale, faceless solid forms intended to represent human heads, which she named Heads. The 1970s also saw Abakanowicz create one of her most famous and enduring pieces: Backs, which was a series of sculptural representations of the human torso seen from behind. The 1980s and 1990s saw Magdalena Abakanowicz experiment with the mediums of metal wood and clay, as well as with representations of the multiplicity of the human body within a societal context. Later works include Agora, a series of trunk-like figures located in Grant Park, Chicago, and Space of Stone, a series of granite boulders. Abakanowicz was the recipient of numerous awards in her lifetime, including honorary memberships of the Academy of Arts, Berlin, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Less
