Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

The artist Paik Nam June was born in what is now South Korea during the early 1930's. He would go to live in the USA mainly to pursue his artistic career. It is Paik that is often referred to as the main creator or founder of video art. In actual fact he was capable of using several differing types of art, and was noted for his willingness of using new technology to develop new forms of art.

« Skin has become inadequate in interfacing with reality. Technology has become the body's new membrane of existence. »
Paik Nam June
Paik Nam Junes innovative use of technology therefore led to the creation of video art as it became known as. Aside from been an artist Paik was a classically trained musician, both his degrees were in music, gained respectively in Tokyo and Munich.

« Our life is half natural and half technological. Half-and-half is good. You cannot deny that high-tech is progress. We need it for jobs. Yet if you make only high-tech, you make war. So we must have a strong human element to keep modesty and natural life. »
Paik Nam June

Advances in TV, audio, and video equipment allowed him to make artistic videos to go with the music he composed himself. By the mid 1960's he was already known as the leading exponent of making musical videos. One of his best known works is "One candle, candle projection." There have been regular exhibitions of his work since his death in 2006.

What is kinetic art?

International movement referring to both apparent and real motion of art created in the 1920s and 1960s. It is explained as art emerging from any medium containing some movement that depends on motion for effect or can be perceived by the viewer. Canvas paintings are some of the notable and earliest examples of this art type. Speaking pertinently, kinetic art today refers to 3 dimensional figures and sculptures such as those operated by machines or those that move naturally. It encompasses a variety of styles and techniques that overlap.
