Belgian sculptor Henri Van Herwegen, known more commonly as Panamarenko, is a conceptual artist famous for designing and building variations of transportation vehicles, such as airplanes, balloons, helicopters and submarines. Some of his noted creations include "Scotch Gambit," "Archeopterix" ("Intelligent Chicken"), "Flying Object," "The Aeromodeller" and "Pahama Novaya Zemblaya," a steel submarine. Panamarenko honed his skills at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp, Belgium. He is said to be inspired by artists like Joseph Beuys, Marcel Broodthaers, Bruce Nauman and Pablo Picasso. Panamarenko’s first exhibition occurred in 1965 at the Antwerp Wide White Space Gallery and, in the time since, Panamarenko’s work has been viewed in galleries in New York City and throughout Europe. Panamarenko's creations have also been on display at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. The airlines VLM, a Belgian-based carrier, named its Fokker 50 aircraft in Panamarenko's honor. He designed an artist book "For Clever Scholars, Astronomers and Doctors," which was a commercial success.
