Theaster Gates

Original Signed Artworks & Limited Edition Prints For Sale

Theaster Gates is an installation artist whose works often centre around social and racial themes, with an aim of highlighting cultural differences and improving underprivileged neighbourhoods through a combination of urban planning and the different mediums of art – he founded the Rebuild Foundation, with some of its most famous works including the restoration of various vacant buildings, and resulting transformations into cultural installations.

« Sometimes the creating that we do is creating a platform that allows other creative people to pitch in. »
Theaster Gates
Gates’ initial foray into art was through the medium of pottery – a skill that he studied for some time in Japan. His installations are often thought-provoking and layered with meaning;

« There were a series of moments when I decided that art was important, and it was an important vehicle for me to express my interest in spaces. »
Theaster Gates

one of his most famous pieces, included in his ‘The Minor Arts’ collection, featured him taking an axe to one of his paintings – the final outcome was a glossy black canvas featuring a gaping hole in its centre, something that Gates has stated was a message regarding the lack of education funding and subsequent closing of various black and poor schools. (Artist website) Read More

What is Performance Art?

What is Performance Art?

Performance presented within the context of fine art that is traditionally interdisciplinary. It may be scripted or unscripted, random or orchestrated carefully; spontaneous or may carefully be planned without the participation of the audience. Performance can be through the media or live and the artist performing can either be present or not. The situation can involve the four basic elements: space, performer's body/his presence through a medium, time and performer-audience relationship. Artwork constitutes actions of a group or an individual at a particular time and space.
