Chalk

Chalk is calcium carbonate, a mineral substance. In art, chalk is most often described in reference to drawing with chalk sticks. These are a mix of chalk, pigment in various colors and gum Arabic, pressed into a stick with four flat sides.

Uncanny

The Uncanny is a concept which Sigmund Freud, psychologist, described as the anxious or strange feeling some individuals experience with familiar objects. Surrealist artists, seeking to reveal the subconscious and reconcile it with reality, used artwork which combined the familiar in unexpected and odd ways.

Surrealism

Surrealism began in the 1920s with artists and writers whose works aimed to reveal the unconscious to unleash subconscious imagination, and explore unusual imagery. Bringing the unconscious into rational life was one key thematic goal of this group influenced by Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theories.
