What is an original artwork?

Original artwork is art which comes directly from the personal inspiration and creativity of an artist. It cannot be directly copied from another artist’s work, though it may be inspired by it. The subject matter can be the same, but it cannot be exactly copied. It may also refer to a unique piece (opposed to a multiple/edition)

Mezzotint

Mezzotint is the process of reverse engraving copper or steel plates so that relief illustrations will show light and shadow. The master plate surface is prepared so it will print solid black. Gray and white areas are prepared differently to show light and shadow.

Automatism

Automatism refers to the process of accessing material from the unconscious or subconscious within the creative process. It is Sigmund Freud’s method used during psychoanalysis called free association. Artists valued the process for its ability to stimulate creative thought and activity.

Ceramic

Ceramic is a term used to describe objects made from clay. Ceramic objects may be decorative or functional. Both types have been made since at least 4,000 B.C. Ceramic art includes making, decorating and baking these objects in a kiln (special high temperature oven).
