What is Assemblage?

Assemblage is the French word for the artistic process of putting together three dimensional objects to create a work of art. Artists often use found objects, such as leaves or stones from nature, discarded items or recycled materials, to assemble in a creative, interesting way.

Gestural is a term which describes painting with freely sweeping brush strokes. The main goal of gestural art was to allow the artist to physically portray emotional impulses. Viewers were thought to understand inner artistic thoughts revealed through the varied, yet expressive paint marks.

East Village Art

In 1981 Patti Aster opened the first art gallery in East Village. She helped launch the careers of several various artists and musicians. The Gallery closed in 1985 due to loss of interest.
