What is Chinese contemporary art?

Chinese Contemporary art is characterized by a profusion of styles and experimental tendencies. Avant- garde exhibitions in the 1980s were closed by government officials, while 1990s political pop and cynical realism emerged. China’s One Child policy also inspired the individual as subject matter.

Décollage

Décollage is the technique of removing, cutting, or tearing away sections of an original image. The French word means to take off, become unstuck or become unglued. Artists who use this technique may use art to symbolically replace values or tear thinking from media influence.

Wood

Wood is one of the most ancient and versatile materials used to create artwork. It has been used as the base for paintings, to make brush handles, pens and pencils, as easels to support canvas, for wood engraving, woodcut and woodblock printing, and sculpting.

Monoprint

Single impression belonging to an image made out of a block that is re-printable. Litho stones, wood blocks or metal plates are used for the purpose of etching upon. Only one impression is produced rather than producing several copies of one image. Mono-printing has many techniques that include etching, lithography and woodcut.
