Artwork which employs more than one medium. It is however, different from multimedia art that refers to artwork that traditionally combines distinct media of visual art. Matter painting is a technique which blends thick impasto pains with cement, mud, sand or shells. The term first emerged in the 1950s, describing the works of Belgian and Dutch painters who focused on painting materials and the different ways paint could be used.

Capitalist realism is a German form of political pop art which sought to challenge the influence American pop art had developed in the Western world. The Cold War era Berlin movement began in 1963, and represented the ideologies of both pop art and socialist realism.
