What is provenance?

It means chronology of ownership, location or custody of an artwork. The reason for tracing an object's provenance is to provide circumstantial and contextual evidence of its original discovery or production by establishing of its ownership, places of storage and custody. Experts opinions, comparative techniques and scientific test results may be used to achieve this.
