Who are the Young British Artists - YBA

Who are the Young British Artists - YBA

Also known as Britart and Brit artists. All these terms refer to a group of artists who started exhibiting together in the year 1988 in London. Majority of the artists graduated at Goldsmiths from BA fine arts course in the late 1980s. They are famous for wild living, use of waste/ throwaway materials and both entrepreneurial and oppositional attitude. In addition, they dominated British art and achieved wide media coverage. Most of these artists were collected and supported initially by Charles Saatchi.

Papier-mâché

Composite material that consists of pieces of pulp or paper reinforced using textiles and bound using adhesives like starch, wallpaper paste or glue. Preparation of Papier Mache can take two methods, one uses paper strips that are glued together and the other method makes use of pulp that's obtained through boiling or soaking paper to which a glue is added. Each of the two methods has its own procedure. The results however, are not much different.

Pastel

Art medium in a stick form that consists of powdered pigment and binder. Pigments used for pastes are the same as those used in producing art media(colored). Pastel's color effect is closely similar to dry pigments than the effects of any other related process. Artworks produced using pastels are called pastel painting, pastel drawing or simply pastel. Pastel can also mean the production of artwork using pastels.

Carborundum

Carborundum is the trademark name for silicon carbide crystals used as an abrasive material in sandpaper, cutting tools and grinding wheels. Artists originally used the substance for grinding lithography stones, but collagraph prints use it to create texture and tone gradients.
